Osinbajo in closed door meeting with governors, service chiefs
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is holding a closed door meeting with service chiefs and some governors from the Niger Delta region. The Nation reports that the meeting is held in the vice-president’s office wing of the Conference Hall in the state house. The governors in attendance are that of Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Edo and Abia states. Ibe Kachikwu, the minister of state of petroleum resources, and Usani Uguru, the minister of Niger Delta affairs, are also at the meeting, which is still in progress at the time of filing this report.Following the continued bombing of oil installations by the Niger Delta Avengers, the federal government has announced that it has set up a committee to negotiate with the militant group. According to Kachikwu, who announced the governor’s decision earlier today, the move was aimed at halting the deadly attacks which had made Nigeria’s oil production plummet to 1.5 million barrels per day. He also noted that the team to engage the militants would be coordinated by the office of the National Security Adviser.
